Lying

Lying can be defined as "an inaccurate or false statement." (www.dictionary.com) There are three types of lies; white lies; selfish lies; unselfish lies. (http://www.boycottliberalism.com/Commentary/Lies.htm) White lies also known as altruistic lies are "considered harmless, or even helpful to the person they are told to." (Understanding Human Communication) Selfish lies "are the most dangerous type of lie and designed to protect or benefit the liar." (http://www.boycottliberalism.com/Commentary/Lies.htm) And finally unselfish lies "are done in an attempt to help others at a sacrifice to oneself." (http://www.boycottliberalism.com/Commentary/Lies.htm) These types of lies make up concept of lying. Also attributed to lying are the reasons as to why people lie. They can include to acquire resources, protect resources, initiate and continue interaction, avoid conflict, avoid interaction or take leave, present a competent image, and to increase social desirability. (Understanding Human Communication)

White lies are very common in our society, and are almost sometimes necessary. An example of a time when a white lie may be used and needed. If someone is unconfident about themselves, for example if they act like they dont have the ability to accomplish something, telling them that they can will boost their confidence and give them hope, and may even help them accomplish that goal. ie.) A not so good hockey player doesn't think he can score. He has gone every game without a goal, and it's the final game. The coach tells him "you can do it, you can win it for us." Now this may not be necessarily true, but by this white lie, the kid may have more confidence and try harder. Even if he doesn't score, his self confidence can be increased because he knows someone believes in him.

Therefore all lying is not bad, and can sometimes positively affect a person, and change them for the better.

Here is an example of a situation where a person lied to try and benefit themselves.
